Month 3 in Review - March

A month ago I was debating whether one would ever need more than one lens (surely a zoom could cover everything, no?), then got the macro at the end of February, followed days later by the acquisition of the Sigma 8-16mm wide angle.  The weather hasn't been the greatest, so I really haven't taken that lens outside much.  And with a 'weird' month, there have been all too many days where I nearly went to bed and realized that I didn't have a daily photo yet - that's really all the motivation behind most of those macro photos from the last couple of weeks.  While I don't have the narrow depth of field figured out yet, I'm learning that a macro lens can make a little mundance object look interesting: think ink dots, the dent in a coin, or the hair on the leaf of a plant.  And yet, looking through my last three months of photos I find that its the grand vistas that I am drawn to the most: Day 9 - Blowing Snow, Day 50 - Spray Lakes Sunset, Day 71 - Burnt Timber Lookout, and Day 85 - Opal.  With spring around the corner (I hope), I'm aiming to capture more landscapes this month, and perhaps start using the polarizer and neutral density filters more.

Some stats for March:
  • Favourite photo: Day 71 - Burnt Timber Lookout
  • Least favourite photo: Day 69 - On the Nightstand
  • Most challenging photo to take:  Day 74 - Hourglass
  • Most creative photo: Day 84 - Dancing Woman
  • Most used Photoshop edits: levels (mostly to lighten), sponge (saturate), unsharp mask
  • Number of photos taken this month: ~700
  • Number of days on which I wouldn't have taken a photo if I didn't have to for this: 24
  • How I feel about this project: It's been a chore some nights, but I'm not giving up.

Day 88 - From Here to WOW

Methinks the macro lens comes in handy for all these oh-it's-after-10pm-and-I-don't-have-a-photo-yet days.  You can even see the ink dots in the orange.

Day 86 - Lichen

Did you know that one of the lichen we commonly see at higher elevations grows only 0.68 mm/yr for several decades, then slows down to a rate of 0.22 mm/yr?

Day 85 - Opal

Had a fun day heading up Opal, an ambitious summit for this time of year. Over six hours up, three hours down. Deep snow, some grass, bare rock, blue sky, flurries, wind, bighorn sheep, moose, Woody's.

Day 82 - Peaks

I've been helping Peakery compile local peak lists, so this is what's currently on my desk.  This is also the 5,000th photo taken with my Nikon D5000, which means I've been averaging 23 photos per day.  Baldy should have a checkmark next to it.

Day 81 - Stuff

Guess what?  It's after 10pm and I didn't have a photo yet.  This is stuff on my desk.

Day 80 - Desk Shopping

This is the back side of a desk I may get this week - and finally start the re-do of my den into a more natural space (shown on pages 2 & 8 in the catalog).

Day 79 - Quartz Crystal

This is the same quartz crystal from Day 13, held up against the flame of a candle.  What a difference a macro lens makes.

It' official: The Sigma wide-angle lens will be my summit lens.  I love it!

Day 69 - On the Nightstand

I was just about to go to bed when I remembered that I didn't have a photo yet.  Blah photo, but I'm tired, so this will have to do.

Day 60 - Dinner

Bun, salami, cheese, carrot, cilantro, pineapple, lemon, hot peppers, and oregano.  Photo taken with my 18-200mm lens, so it still seems to work.

Month 2 in Review - February

Two months down, ten more to go.  I continue to be amazed at how forcing myself to take a photo each and every day actually makes me learn things, day after day.  Before this month I hadn't a clue as to what it meant to have a 'fast lens', or how much of a difference there is between 8mm and 11mm.  I never understood why anyone would ever really need more than maybe a couple of lenses unless you're a pro.  I knew about wide angle and telephoto, but I thought my 18-200mm covered the bulk of that.  And if you had suggested a year ago that within seven months I would accumulate two more lenses (and spend a little fortune in the process), I'd have thought you're perhaps a little off.  And yet, here I am, totally enthralled by what I had learned in John Marriott's photography seminar, photography in general, and learning more about lenses.  At first I was eyeing that Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6.  I questioned its real-life application, but I continued to be amazed by Darwin Wiggett's stunning wide angle shots (heck, I seem to be amazed by any image of Darwin's).  Then, in the midst of this 365 project, and in the midst of having my oh-so-many darn-it's-10pm-and-I-need-a-photo shots, I realized that perhaps more than the wide angle photography, the macro is something that I drift towards.  Should I get a macro lens or a wide angle lens?  That was my dilemma, until I thought, why not both?!  I've only tried the macro on a few occassions and the wide angle hasn't come in yet, but I'll be sure to have a wider variety of images in March.

The end of the month was topped by me taking a nice big fall in extreme weather in Waterton.  My 18-200mm lens got damaged in that fall: the UV filter was completely busted and the lens is acting up.  It's stiff from about 50-200mm and makes funny noises when focusing.  The Camera Store tells me it's four weeks to get an estimate, and four more weeks for an actual repair.  That would put me right into my Colorado and Utah vacation (where having this lens non-functional is simply not an option), so I'll keep testing it over the next week and decide if it's trustworthy enough as is.  No repairs right now.

Some stats for February:
  • Favourite photo: Day 50 - Spray Lakes Sunset
  • Least favourite photo: Day 47 - Beyond the Butcher Block
  • Most challenging photo to take: Day 54 - Jade - water kept dripping off
  • Most creative photo: Day 43 - Aspen Grove
  • Most used Photoshop edits: sponge (saturate), unsharp mask - less editing than last month
  • Number of photos taken this month: ~990
  • Number of days on which I wouldn't have taken a photo if I didn't have to for this: 21
  • How I feel about this project: happy, excited, and torn with all these lens issues.  I'll keep going.

Day 59 - Repairs

I'm starting to think it might be cheaper to replace a camera lens than to get my   neck back in order.  Two strained discs (C2, C4), messed up SCM, grade 2 whiplash.  And my neck curves backwards!
